Everything was going Lancaster Bible College's way. Up 2-1 over arch-rival Philadelphia Biblical with less than 20 minutes to play, the Chargers were fending off Crimson Eagle chances and still trying to score an insurance goal. However, with 14:31 to play, PBU's Gary Bruce set in motion the three minutes that would change the game for LBC.
Bruce scored his second goal of the game with 14:31 to play and tied the game at 2-2. Three minutes later, he completed his hat trick and put the Crimson Eagles ahead for good as PBU held on to beat LBC, 3-2 on Homecoming.
"Today was disappointing after coming out so strong," Chargers' Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We needed to play smarter in the second half and just didn't do it."
In the first half of play, the Chargers opened the scoring, just two minutes into the game, with a perfectly run set piece off a corner kick. Senior
Taylor Dooley sent the ball into the box and it was headed into the back of the net by fellow senior
Andrew Risser to give LBC a 1-0 lead.
"That was a great way to get us started and great corner kick," Ardt said.
PBU tied the game 12 minutes later when a Crimson Eagles' player was taken down in the box. Bruce converted the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
LBC [2-4-1, 2-1-1] regained the lead less than three minutes later when Dooley's free kick from 22 yards out clipped the side of the PBU wall and went into the right side of the goal. The goal was Dooley's sixth goal of the season and the score remained the same through halftime.
"We had a little bit of a letdown when they converted the PK, but we regained control quickly and Dooley's goal was a big boost," Ardt said. "We felt good at halftime and just needed to keep doing the things we were doing."
Unfortunately, that didn't happen for LBC as PBU began to get more and more chances as the second half wore on.
"We needed to play smart in the second half and continue to win 50-50 balls," Ardt said. "We didn't do that and it cost us."
Bruce's second goal came off a great pass from Justin Dillon as Dillon's through ball into the box was put into the back of the net by Bruce who had beat his defender.
The game winning goal, Bruce's sixth of the season, was put in off a rebound. A shot from the right side was saved by LBC's
Jarrod Bergey, but the rebound shot out front and Bruce was there to put home the goal.
"Give PBU credit," Ardt said. "They stuck with their game plan and executed it in the second half.
LBC had chances late in the game, including a corner kick, but could not convert and lost to PBU for the third straight time.
The Chargers fall to 2-4-1 and still have East Region games against Baptist Bible and Valley Forge Christian to determine their seed for the East Region playoffs. LBC has three games again this week, a non-league game at Moravian on Monday, an East Region showdown with BBC in Clarks Summit on Wednesday and they will get back to NEAC play on Saturday when they host Wells at 2:00 p.m.
