Chargers Grind Out Tough Win Over Cazenovia, 46-40

"I like when we win pretty, we just didn't do that today." - Lancaster Bible College Head Women's Basketball Coach Doug Helsel

No quote better describes the Chargers' 46-40 victory over Cazenovia on Saturday then what is written above. There was very little that was pretty on Saturday, but a win is a win, especially when it helps snap a two-game losing streak.

Brooklyn Wilson led all scorers with 15 points, while Emily Lloyd added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Chargers who won for the first time in a week and rebounded after losing by 26 to SUNYIT on Friday night.

"Mentally we just weren't there today," Helsel said. "We made lots of mistakes and I'm not sure if it was the three games in four days thing or what, but it wasn't our best."

Despite the poor shooting and turnovers, the Chargers [6-8 overall, 6-4 NEAC] played well down the stretch and hit key free throws to stop the Wildcats' comeback attempt.

"We hung tough at the end," Helsel said. "We won the last three minutes of the game and that was the most important part of today."

Cazenovia's Megan Pomarico's layup with 4:28 left to play, put the Wildcats ahead 40-36. After Lauren Heliger sunk two free throws to bring the Chargers back with in two, Wilson nailed a 3-pointer with 3:11 left to give the Chargers their first lead since the 11:24 mark.

"Brooklyn stepped up and was a leader out there today," Helsel said. "She has been playing at a high level."

LBC made five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win and though it wasn't pretty, it was a win and important one at that.

The Chargers will look to continue their march to the .500 mark on Tuesday when they host Penn St. Abington at 8 p.m.
