Giving up big first half scoring runs has plagued the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball all season long (see: Walla Walla, Washington trip). Friday night in Aurora, N.Y., it looked as though it was going to happen again to LBC. Down 17-6 just six minutes into the game, the Chargers appeared headed towards another large halftime deficit.
LBC however apparently had had enough of giving up their own big scoring runs and decided to go on one themselves - for the rest of the first half. The Chargers outscored the Express, 24-9 the rest of the opening half and took a 30-26 lead into halftime. LBC forced 11 turnovers in the final 13:47 of the half and got 25 combined points from
Emily Lloyd,
Sarah Heilenman and
Lauren Heliger.
The second half turned out to be nothing like the first half as the teams traded baskets for nearly the entire half. Each team took the lead several times and relinquished it as well several times. LBC finally got some breathing room when Lloyd sank two free throws with 1:39 to play to give LBC a 58-54 advantage.
After a Wells bucket, Heilenman extended the lead back to four with two free throws. An Express turnover and two Heliger free throws later and the Chargers were on their way to their third consecutive NEAC win, 63-56.
Heliger finished with a game-high 26 points [17 in the second half] and was 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Heilenman added 12 points and seven boards, while Lloyd had 14 points.
LBC is now 3-5 overall and 3-1 in NEAC play, good enough for second place in the NEAC South Division.
The Chargers will look to extend their NEAC winning streak to four on Saturday when they face North Division leader, Keuka at 3 p.m.
