Box Score Though it is not the exact ending the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team wanted, the Chargers won their season finale on Saturday, defeating SUNY Cobleskill, 2-1 in Cobleskill, N.Y. LBC's postseason hopes ended last week when they mathematically could no longer get to the six wins necessary for them to compete in the NCCAA East Region playoffs, so this week became more about pride and growth as a program.
With that in mind, this week has been quite successful for the Chargers as they finished the week, 2-0-1 and won their first two NEAC games of the season. On Saturday, the Chargers got goals from
Kevin Forsyth and
Miles Herron.
Forsyth opened the scoring just 3:38 into the game as his shot deflected off a Tigers' defender and into the goal. LBC held that lead until SUNY Cobleskill was awarded a penalty kick with 2:12 remaining in the first half for a handball in the box. Mark Gaetano converted the PK for the Tigers and the teams went into halftime, tied 1-1.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Herron beat the keeper on a 1-on-1 and gave LBC a lead they would not relinquish. The Chargers held a 11-9 lead in shots for the game, while the Tigers held a 9-8 edge in corner kicks.
"We played a good second half," Chargers' Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "I thought
Jordan Harbin played a solid 90 minutes and it was good to end the season with a win."
While it was nice to end the season with a win and send the seniors off with a win, Ardt and the Chargers know this season did not go as planned and there is work to be done.
"We need to start preparing on Monday for next season," Ardt said. "We need to see what worked this season and what did not work."
The Chargers finished the year with a 4-10-3 record overall and a 2-6-2 mark in NEAC play. The four wins are the fewest since the 2006 season when the Chargers went 3-16-1. Saturday also capped the careers of Tim Landis, Jr.,
Dwight Shelly,
Sean Westerlund and
Richard Westerlund. The four seniors led LBC to a 43-39-6 mark in their four seasons and were part of two NCCAA Division II East Region Championship teams.
