Big First Half Propels Pioneers Past Chargers

Box Score If you were to ask about the first two games of the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball season, the response would be the age old question - do you want the good news or the bad news first?

The good news? The Chargers have shot 44 percent or better through their first two games and have had the game's leading scorer in each game.

The bad news? The Chargers have had 30 turnovers in each game and have been outrebounded as well.

On Saturday night, the Chargers lost to Wisconsin-Platteville, 82-52 in the second game of the UW-Platteville Thanksgiving Classic. LBC senior Keith Keltner had a game-high 16 points, but the Pioneers had three scorers in double figures and raced out to a 43-19 halftime lead to take early control of the game.

"It was a struggle," Chargers' Head Coach Marshall Tague said. "We could not compete with their physical play and they are a good team with the ability to shoot the ball from every position."

Part of the turnover problem for the Chargers (0-2) is when they are happening. In their season-opening loss to Eastern, the Chargers committed 15 turnovers in each half, while on Saturday night, they committed 14 in the first half and 16 in the second half. If the turnovers were happening early due to nervousness or late because of tiredness, at least there would be a reason for the turnovers.  Unfortunately, many of LBC's turnovers are due to inexperience and are coming at many key points in the game.

"We won't fix the turnovers overnight, but they do need to be fixed," Tague said. "We had some trouble with their full court press, but we didn't give and played hard the entire game."

Despite the turnovers, the young Chargers played well for much of Saturday's second half, including Dondre Perry who had 10 points and CJ Dunston who had nine points on 4-of-5 shooting. Fellow freshman Luke Roundy had three points and seven rebounds for the Chargers.

LBC will face MacMurray College (2-2) in Sunday's Consolation Game that begins at 2 p.m. ET.
