Box Score Baptist Bible's Luke Peterson hit three-pointer after three-pointer and when he finally did miss, his teammate, Dan Dodd would grab the rebound and put home a lay-up. And so it went for the Lancaster Bible men's basketball team on Saturday at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers would claw back into the game and need one stop on defense to keep the momentum, but Peterson or Dodd and even sometimes Dan Decker would get free and nail another big shot.
The Chargers did everything they could, but time ran out and the Defenders snapped a four-game losing streak against LBC and won, 74-69. Peterson finished with 24 points, while Decker and Dodd added 17 points as BBC improved to 2-3 this season.
"Their ability to hit big shots hurt us," Chargers' Head Coach
Marshall Tague said. "They haven't hit shot that well all year, but today it clicked for them and Peterson just killed us."
Though they lost, Tague said he was proud of the way the Chargers fought back in the second half as they cut a 13-point deficit with 9:55 to play to just four points with 2:32 left.
"I'm proud of the fight the guys put up with our back against the wall," Tague said. "We've been working on that and it's the first game we've been down and battled back. Previously we have gone the other way and fallen even further behind."
Seniors
Keith Keltner and
Dan Karl provided most of LBC's offense as they combined for 45 points. Karl had 24 of the 45 points and was 5-of-11 from beyond the arc. Keltner scored 21 points and added eight rebounds and six assists.
Saturday marked the first time LBC had two players score 20 points or more since January 24, 2012 when
Andrew Risser and
Keith Keltner scored 21 and 20 respectively in the Chargers', 103-99 overtime win against Penn St. Abington.
When asked if he thought the team was pressing because they are still looking for their first win this season, Tague said he didn't think so.
"We have energy in practice and in games," Tague said. "I think the only time they think about it is after games. We need to just do the little things a bit better. Things like fouls and discipline with the ball. We are going through growing pain and we need to get through them and learn from them."
One of the bright spots for the Chargers on Saturday was holding the Defenders to just six offensive rebounds and collecting seven more rebounds [37-30].
"We did a pretty good job on the boards today, so we'll take that as a positive today and use it to motivate ourselves," Tague said.
Sophomore
Jon Bird finished with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocks, while fellow sophomore
Corey Leonard had eight points and six rebounds.
The Chargers (0-5) are back in action on Monday night when they travel up Route 222 to take on Alvernia at 7 p.m.
**UPDATE** Due to an ineligible player, Baptist Bible was forced to forfeit all of its games from the 2012-13 season, thus giving LBC a 2-0 win. 2-0 is the designated final score a game must receive due to a forfeit. -- July 2013
