Just win one more.
That's the formula for the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team's playoff chances after their victory on Tuesday night at Penn St. Abington. With two games remaining, the Chargers need to win one game to clinch a NEAC South Division playoff berth. Should Penn St. Berks lose any of their final three games, the Chargers would also clinch a playoff berth, but this team does not want to wait around for a team to lose.
Tuesday in Abington, the Chargers led for almost all of the first half and a
Carmin Nachtigal jumper with 13 seconds left gave them an eight-point lead heading into halftime. Their lead remained in the eight to ten point range for much of the second half before the Lady Lions made a late run and cut the deficit to three at 52-49 with 2:04 to play. LBC hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:50 however to secure the 59-49 victory.
"We sort of just grinded it out," LBC Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We did what we needed to do. We got a good effort from lots of people."
Those people were
Lauren Heliger and her 20 points,
Brooklyn Wilson's 15 points and senior
Brittney Becker who had six points and eight assists.
The Chargers, on their longest winning streak in seven seasons, now turn their focus to Thursday night's opponent, College of St. Elizabeth. The Screaming Eagles defeated the Chargers, 64-58 on January 18 and will most likely be LBC's opponent in the NEAC Quarter-Finals should the Chargers make the playoffs. St. Elizabeth has already clinched the second seed in the NEAC South Division and boasts the conference's leading scorer, Sabrina Jarmolinski, who averages 20.5 points per game.
Thursday's game will also be LBC's Play 4Kay game in which the Chargers will don pink shoes, socks and headbands. Pink rally towels will also be given out to fans and the LBC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will provide information on the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation. Tip-off for Thursday's game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
