Bats Come Alive as Chargers Earn Split With Crimson Eagles

The saying says, "Good things come to those who wait."

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team decided they had waited long enough on Thursday. After dropping game one of a doubleheader against NCCAA East Region rival Philadelphia Biblical, 8-4, the Chargers' bats came alive and pounded out 26 hits en route to a 19-5 game two win, the Chargers' first of 2012.

Frank DiFilippo led LBC with an 8-for-10 day over the two games, including six hits and five RBI's in game two's win. Drew Tilley had five hits in game two, while Paul Greco was 4-for-5 with four runs batted in. Richard Westerlund and Caleb Mayer  had three hits each for LBC whose record now stands at 1-9 this season.

"I'm very pleased with how we responded in game two," Chargers' Skipper Doug Yager said. "I thought we bounced back in a big way after a tough loss in game one."

In game one, the Chargers led 3-0 after the top of the first, but gave up the lead quickly as the Crimson Eagles scored four times in their half of the first inning. Down 5-3 in the fifth, the Chargers got one run back and made it 5-4, but PBU scored three times in the bottom sixth to put the game away.

"Mayer pitched well for four innings, but we just didn't give him any support," Yager said.

Game two looked to be going the same way as game one, as PBU scored twice in the bottom of the first off LBC pitcher Micay McClay. McClay allowed just three hits and three runs the rest of the way as he earned the complete game win.

Trailing, 2-0 in the top of the third, LBC sent 13 players to the plate and scored nine runs on eight hits to turn a pitcher's dual into a blowout. DiFilippo singled and doubled in the inning, driving in two runs on the double, while Greco and Westerlund also added RBI singles.

Furthering the blowout, the Chargers scored six more times in the top of the fourth to take a commanding, 15-3 lead. LBC sent 10 more batters to plate in the fourth and scored the six runs on seven hits.

The last time the Chargers scored at least 19 runs was oddly enough at PBU on April 14, 2010. LBC swept the Crimson Eagles that day, winning 16-0 in game one and 21-0 in game two.

"It's great for the guys that we are finally in the win column," Yager said. "They played well today and we'll see if we can start gaining some momentum."

The Chargers open NEAC play this Saturday when they host Keuka for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Due to the chance of rain on Saturday, if the games cannot be played, they will be made up on Tuesday afternoon.
