Chargers' Rally Falls Just Short Against Keuka

Down 8-1 after three innings is not the position the Lancaster Bible College baseball team would like to be in, but on Saturday in their first-ever NEAC contest against Keuka, that's exactly where the Chargers found themselves. Rather than concede defeat, the Chargers battled back and closed the gap to one at 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh.

With runners on the corners, Micah McClay hit a ground ball into the hole at short, but Keuka's Thomas Drumm dove and knocked the ball down and just got the runner, Mitchell Kumher, sliding into second for the final out of the game.

Keuka 9, Lancaster Bible 8.

Prior to the heartbreak, the Chargers scored at least one run in each of the last four innings, including two in the bottom of the seventh. After Kody Godsey popped up to second for the first out of the inning, the Chargers' next two runners reached base and with runners on second and third, Drew Tilley stepped to the plate.

Then the rains came.

After almost a 45-minute delay, Tilley stepped back up to the plate and delivered a shot to the right side that eluded Keuka's second baseman and went into right field. Both LBC runners scored and the score stood at 9-8. The next batter, Caleb Mayer, struck out, but not before pinch-runner Ryan Shannon stole third to put the tying run 90 feet from home.

Kumher drew a walk on an at-bat that saw come back from a 1-2 count. McClay stepped to the plate and hit the aforementioned shot to shortstop that was stopped and thrown to second for the game-ending fielder's choice, dropping the Chargers to 1-10 this season.

Peter Shue led LBC with three hits, while McClay, Godsey and Tim Landis, Jr. added two hits each.

Because of the rain, the second game of the doubleheader was postponed until Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
