After scoring almost nine runs a game during a seven-game stretch that saw the Lancaster Bible College baseball team go 6-1, the Chargers' bats were silenced in a doubleheader loss to NEAC foe Penn St. Berks. The Nittany Lions won game one, 8-0 and took game two, 14-4.
The Chargers managed just one hit through the first four innings in game one as Nittany Lions' starter Matt Emrick shut down the Chargers. Emrick finished with a complete game shutout as he allowed just four hits, while striking out four and walking one. Connor Corson and Kyle Hartman each had a home run to power the Nittany Lions' offensive attack.
Richard Westerlund,
Caleb Mayer,
Peter Shue and Tim Landis, Jr. had the LBC hits.
The Chargers (8-16, 2-6 NEAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two thanks to a Nittany Lion error, but Penn St. Berks came right back in the top of the second and scored six runs, four of which came courtesy of the long ball. Hartman led off the inning with his second home run of the day to tie the game at 1-1 and after two more runs had crossed the plate, shortstop Nick Vitelli capped off the inning with a three-run home run to make it 6-1.
LBC fought back and cut the deficit to 7-4 in the bottom of the third thanks to a home run by
Kody Godsey and an RBI groundout by
Drew Tilley. The Nittany Lions' bats continued to churn out hits, including three more home runs in the final two innings to put the Chargers away. Corson and Vitelli each hit their second home runs of the day in the final two innings.
Micah McClay took the loss for LBC, allowing eight runs in 5 2/3 innings. A pitching carousel followed, including senior
Spencer Collier who recorded the final out in the seventh inning. Godsey led the Chargers in game two, going 2-for-3. Westerlund, Shue and
Josiah Weaver had the other LBC hits.
The Chargers are now 1-15 all-time against Penn St. Berks, with their only win coming during the 1989 season.
LBC is back in action on Monday when they travel to Abington, Pa. to take on Penn St. Abington. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
