For programs that had few wins to its name heading into the season, the Lancaster Bible College men's and women's tennis teams played anything but an inexperienced squad this season and ended it with another great mark as two players earned NEAC Second-Team honors and others earned NEAC Third-Team honors.
The NEAC Tennis Championships were held over the past four days in Clarks Summit, Pa. and several Chargers represented LBC.
Kayla Scott was the lone female member of the tennis program to make the tournament and she wasted little time making her presence felt as she battled back from a set down to win her NEAC Semi-Final Match against Penn St. Abington's Lauren Hetzel. Scott won 3-6, 6-4, (11-9). Scott, the third seed, lost in the Flight Two Final to Wells' Kate Ellis, 6-0, 6-0, but Chargers' Head Coach Ethan McNaughton was very proud her performance.
"I know she is disappointed in how she played, but she did well and the coaching staff is very happy for her," McNaughton said.
The men's individual tournament took place on Sunday and again, many LBC players made their mark in their first-ever tournament. The doubles team of
Grant Noel and
Alex Derus lost both of their matches, but played well against opponents who were seeded higher than them. The doubles team of
Jeremy Davis and
Collin George also lost their first match, but rebounded in the consolation round of the Flight Three Tournament to earn a 9-7 victory and NEAC Third-Team Conference honors.
In the singles portion of the tournament, five LBC players took part in the action, including
Phil Smock who was the fourth seed in the Flight One Tournament. Playing the top seed in the NEAC, Smock fell to Josh Cartmill of Penn St. Harrisburg, 6-0, 6-0. Smock lost his consolation match as well, 6-1, 6-0.
In the Flight Two Tournament, LBC freshman
Alex Derus lost to Jordan Domsky of Penn St. Abington, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round, but rebounded to win his consolation match, 6-0, 6-1 and earn NEAC Third-Team honors.
Alex Ko represented the Chargers in the Flight Four Tournament and lost a heartbreaker in his opening match to Dashiell Kopp of Penn St. Berks, 6-1, 2-6, (10-7). Ko reversed the score in his consolation match, as he rallied from a set down to win in a 10-point tiebreaker. Ko earned NEAC Third-Team honors by winning, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), (10-7).
In the Flight Five Tournament,
Jeremy Davis won his first match against Creston Smoker of Penn St. Berks, 6-1, 6-2 and fell just short in the Flight Five Final, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-5. Davis earns NEAC Second-Team honors to go along with his Third-Team honors from the doubles competition.
Finally, in the Flight Six Tournament, LBC's
Collin George gave everything he had against Anthony Hui of Penn St. Harrisburg, but came up just short and lost, 2-6, 6-1, (10-7). George's second match featured much of the same, as he won the first set, but fell just short and lost, 3-6, 6-2, (10-8).
