After losing a 17-16 heartbreaker to Gallaudet just before Easter Break, the Lancaster Bible College baseball team made sure to score enough runs on Monday to win two or three games if they wanted. The Chargers scored a season-high 22 runs in game one on 24 hits en route to a 22-7 win and followed that performance up with an 11-3 victory in game two. It marks the third straight season the Chargers have swept the Patriots during the regular season.
In the opener, eight LBC players had two more hits, including
Richard Westerlund and
Kody Godsey who had four hits each.
Matthew Day, making just his second start this season, was 2-for-5 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.
Frank DiFilippo was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in, while freshman
Peter Shue also drove in four runs as part of his 3-for-5 game at the plate.
Oddly enough, the Chargers actually trailed 4-3 heading into the top of fourth in game one. And after loading the bases in the top of the fourth,
Paul Greco hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 4-4 with two outs. Back-to-back doubles by DiFilippo and Godsey gave LBC a 7-4 lead and the Chargers were off and running.
The Patriots responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to cut LBC's lead to 10-7, but the Chargers responded with eight more runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to blow the game open.
Game one starter
Jake Ritchey pitched his second consecutive complete game for his third win of the season. Ritchey scattered 10 hits and allowed six earned runs, while striking out seven and walking just two.
The Patriots jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in game two, but LBC erased the deficit quickly with three runs in both the second and third innings.
Caleb Mayer led the way for LBC in game two with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI and two runs scored. Fellow freshman Mitch Kumher was 1-for-3 with three RBI as LBC won for the third time in four games.
LBC (6-14) is now 3-1 in NCCAA East Region play and with a sweep of Baptist Bible on Wednesday, the Chargers would earn the region's top seed and host the region playoffs on April 23. The Chargers will look to exact revenge for last season's loss to BBC in the East Region Semi-Finals.
Wednesday's doubleheader, in Lancaster, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
