Box Score For the third consecutive game, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team played into double overtime. And for the second time in those three contests, 110 minutes of soccer was not enough time to decide a winner and the Chargers settled for a tie.
After being down, 2-0 to Penn St. Berks for much of the first half, the Chargers'
Sean Westerlund scored with 3:27 to play before halftime to give LBC momentum, which continued into the second half and resulted in the tying goal with 29:40 to play.
Miles Herron was pulled down in the box and
Dwight Shelly took the resulting penalty kick to pull the Chargers even. Both teams had many chances the rest of regulation and into overtime, but neither team could capitalize.
"It was a game full of chances for both teams," LBC Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We lacked a finishing touch in our offensive third today. We had chances and just didn't finish."
Ardt was pleased with team's effort to comeback and earn a point, but reiterated that the Chargers still have many things to work on.
"We tried a lot of guys in new positions to mix a few things up," Ardt said. "We need a better commitment to defense. Our disorganization hurts us and Penn St. Berks took advantage of that on their goals."
With three straight double-overtime games, the Chargers (0-2-2 overall, 0-1-2 NEAC) have basically played 3 2/3 games in a span of five days, something that Ardt believes may be lingering.
"It's not an excuse, it's just something we are dealing with right now," Ardt said of the team's tired legs. "Good teams overcome things like this and we want to be a good team."
The Chargers will have just a day's rest however as they welcome Albright to Charger Field on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
