Box Score Playing for the fourth time in a week, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team has developed a bad habit of falling behind teams early. In each of their four games, prior to Friday, the Chargers had given up the first goal. Two of the past three games, the Chargers had to erase two-goal deficits to earn draws.
Friday's game against Albright offered LBC the chance to not only score first, but to crack the win column as well for the first time this season. The visiting Lions put an end to the first chance just six minutes into the game when Tyler Waters scored on a pretty goal that saw him spin around a defender and score into the lower right hand corner of the net. Six minutes later, Waters all but put an end to the second chance, when he scored his second goal of the game.
Albright controlled play for much of the game afterwards as well and ended up winning, 4-0 over the Chargers, dropping LBC to 0-3-2 this season.
"The first 15 minutes hurt us," Chargers' Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We started slow and they made us pay."
LBC had some chances late in the first half and turned their play around a bit, but Albright's team defense rarely allowed the Chargers to earn good scoring opportunities.
"I thought we did some things right late in the first half and got some better play out of our midfielders, but we still need to play more consistently," Ardt said.
The Lions (4-2) widened their lead 19 minutes into the second half on a goal Shawn Murphy and put the game away 11 minutes later when Michael Watkins went around three LBC defenders and scored into the right hand corner to make it 4-0.
Despite the four goals allowed, LBC goalkeeper
Tim Landis, Jr. made three or four great saves for the Chargers, ensuring that the game stayed close for as long as it did. For the day, Landis, Jr. had eight saves, bringing his season total to 38.
LBC has the weekend off before traveling to Philadelphia, Pa. on Tuesday to take on NEAC foe Penn St. Abington. The game, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., will be played at Father Judge High School.
Notes:
-This is the third straight year that Albright has scored four goals in its victory over Lancaster Bible. The Lions won, 4-1 in Lancaster in 2010 and 4-0 last season in Reading, Pa.
