Box Score Making what they hope is their final trip to upstate New York this season, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team knows how important games in the middle of the season are, especially conference games. Last season, the Chargers were unable to string together many conference wins throughout the middle portion of their schedule. While they finished in third place, many of the Chargers thought they may have let some games slip away last year.
That was anything but the case on Sunday at Cazenovia. The Chargers took hold of the game right away and cruised to a 70-45 victory over the host Wildcats. It is the seventh straight win for LBC, which is the most since the 1998-99 team won eight straight games en route to a 16-6 record.
LBC (12-2, 8-1 NEAC) charged out of the gate scoring 27 of the game's first 40 points. After an early eight-point lead evaporated down to five, the Chargers put together a 14-5 run to lead 27-13 with 6:53 to play in the first half. Another 13-4 run just two minutes later gave LBC a 41-21 halftime lead. The Chargers built their lead due in large part to shooting 19-of-24 from the free throw line in the opening half. The Wildcats committed 17 first-half fouls to give the Chargers many opportunities at the line.
"It was nice to get on top early and not have to work to stay or get back in the game like have had to do recently," LBC Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "It will certainly help for Monday's game that we were able to rest some legs."
Senior
Lauren Heliger led all scorers with 21 points, while
Brooklyn Wilson added 13 points. Sophomore
Sarah Heilenman had 11 points and seven rebounds, while freshman
Aubrey Folger just missed her fifth double-double of the season with nine points and 10 rebounds.
"Lauren hit a lot of shots for us and Brooklyn shot the ball pretty well again," Helsel said. "I think as a team we need to come out and do the exact same things we did today. We met a lot of our goals we had set before the game and it was a good effort by the ladies."
The Chargers will take on SUNYIT on Monday in Utica, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
