Box Score Fresh off their second win of the season on Sunday against Cazenovia, the Lancaster Bible men's basketball team hoped to string together its first winning streak of the season. However, after a disastrous first half, the Chargers trailed, 41-24 at halftime and looked destined to get blown out. That continued to be the trend in the opening minutes of the second half as SUNYIT built a 24-point lead with 16:35 to play.
"It was one of the worst first halves of the year," Chargers' Head Coach
Marshall Tague said. "We couldn't do anything right and what we did do right, we ended up screwing up."
The Chargers finally woke up and nearly completed one of the greatest comebacks in school history. Trailing 50-26, the Chargers went on a 37-15 run over the next 15 minutes of the game to pull within two points, 65-63 with 1:34 to go. LBC's big scoring run included a 15-0 scoring spree that lasted six minutes and saw the coming of age of two freshmen as well.
Freshmen
Dondre Perry and
CJ Dunston had the best games of their young careers on Monday as Perry dropped a career-high 20 points and Dunston added 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
After Perry's three-pointer with 1:34 to play brought the Chargers to within two, the Wildcats' Desmian Greer hit a three-pointer of his own as the shot clock wound down to give SUNYIT its five-point lead back. A missed three-pointer and a foul by the Chargers on their next possession put the Wildcats at the line and they sealed the victory with free throws and held on for a 72-67 victory.
"I thought we really picked up the energy and our bench played great in the second half," Tague said. "Dre played well and attacked the basket hard, while CJ was solid and great on the boards."
While not wanting to think of what might have been, Tague said he was very impressed with the team's second half effort.
"We played together as a team in the second half and competed after a first half that lacked passion and energy," Tague said. "We gave ourselves a chance to win and that's all we can ask for. We wanted to play a second half that we all could be proud of and we did that."
In addition to Perry and Dunston, senior
Caleb Graves had eight points, while
Dan Karl had seven.
The Chargers (2-14, 2-6 NEAC) will look to put two halves together on Wednesday when they face Penn St. Abington at 8 p.m.
