Box Score For the fourth straight game, the Lancaster Bible men's basketball team held a halftime lead. On Saturday, unlike the previous three games, the Chargers held the lead and turned it into their first win of the 2012-13 season, defeating Wells, 57-48 at Horst Athletic Center.
The Chargers played well on both ends of the floor, but when LBC needed a bucket, they turned to one person on Saturday - senior
Dan Karl. Karl had 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and provided the Chargers with a boost several times.
"Wen we needed a hoop, Dan was there," Chargers' Head Coach
Marshall Tague said.
The Chargers led by three points at halftime the previous three games, but on Saturday led the Express by eight, 27-19. It took all of two minutes for the lead to nearly evaporate as Wells opened the second half on a 7-0 run before Tague called timeout. After the timeout, LBC restored order and went on an 8-0 run of their own over the next 2:16.
The Express (5-8, 1-2 NEAC) cut the deficit to three points two more times in the half, but the Chargers defense held strong and buckets by Karl and sophomore
Jon Bird propelled the Chargers to victory.
"We were locked in defensively for most of the game," Tague said. "I think the team is starting to understand that if we stick to our game, we can be a tough team to play."
Bird finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior
Keith Keltner added 12 points, while sophomore
Corey Leonard had a game-high nine rebounds. The team's ability to rebound was key to LBC's victory Tague said.
"Winning the boards was a big thing," Tague said of the Chargers who held a 36-27 edge in rebounding. "I thought we got some big rebounds today, especially late in the game."
The Chargers also limited their turnovers on Saturday, especially during key possessions, something that has haunted them all season long.
"We had very few bad possessions today," Tague said. "I think in other games this season, we would battle back, but not complete the comeback or hold onto the lead. Today however, we took a punch and punched back early in the second half."
Mostly though, Tague said he was happy for the guys to get their first win.
"I'm glad for the guys," Tague said. "I'm glad they get to see some fruit for their hard work."
The Chargers (1-10, 1-2 NEAC) return to action on Monday when they host Keuka at 6 p.m.
