Chargers Blow Big Second Half Lead, Fall to Keuka

Box Score Riding the momentum from its first win of the season, the Lancaster Bible men's basketball team played some of its best basketball of the season for the first 30 minutes of Monday's game against Keuka. Unfortunately for the Chargers, Keuka gave them an ugly reminder about playing for the full 40 minutes.

Down 15 points after Corey Leonard's three-pointer with 10:06 to play, the Storm re-grouped and went on a 14-0 run over the next 3:33 to cut the deficit to one, 53-52. The Chargers continued to hold the lead until Keuka's Teddy Tuggles tied the game at 60-60 with one of his 14 free throws.

LBC re-took the lead and once again held the lead until Tuggles came to the line again and tied the score at 67-67 with 1:16 remaining. Two more Tuggles' free throws and one by Tyler Hixson gave the Storm a 70-67 lead with 14 seconds to play.

The Chargers (1-11, 1-3 NEAC) worked the ball down the floor and found senior Dan Karl on the wing for a three-pointer. His shot was short (one of the few that didn't go down for him on this day) and Keuka grabbed the rebound and iced the game with two more free throws from Tuggles.

The outcome spoiled Karl's career day as he scored 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting. It marked the fourth time this season Karl has hit the 20-point mark. He also scored 20 on Saturday in LBC's win over Wells. The 28 points is the most for a single player since Darrell Epps scored 28 against Lebanon Valley on December 7, 2011.

"Dan has been unconscious lately, he hits them when we need them," Chargers' Head Coach Marshall Tague said. "Tonight he was in good spots to catch and shoot and he played well."

The loss sucks the momentum from the team however, but Tague said the squad will try to learn from such a tough loss.

"We are in learning moments mode and this is a learning moment," Tague said. "We couldn't hold the lead and when we need a stop, we couldn't get one. Tuggles did what he does and he hurt us down the stretch."

Despite playing so well for 30 minutes, Tague said the momentum of the game shifted and the Chargers couldn't get it back.

"When the momentum shifts, it's hard to get back," Tague said. "They forced their will on us and when they cut the lead to about eight or so, I think we started to feel it and started to press a little."

Senior Keith Keltner had 14 points, while Caleb Graves had eight points.

The Chargers will play their next five games on the road, starting with Wednesday's game at Gallaudet in Washington, D.C. The Bison defeated the Chargers, 71-60 on December 8 in Lancaster.
