Box Score It wasn't the prettiest win of the season (by a long shot), but the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team found a way to win on Monday, defeating defending North Eastern Athletic Conference Champion, Keuka, 58-50 at Horst Athletic Center. In terms of meaningful wins this season, this one might have been the biggest.
Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half, as the Chargers led, 17-15. Keuka managed just five buckets in the first half, four of which were from beyond the arc, while the Chargers didn't do much better as they connected for seven baskets.
In the second half however, each team found its offensive groove and the game finally appeared to feature two of the top teams in the NEAC this season. The Storm struck first as they erased the halftime deficit and took an eight-point lead of their own at 30-22 with 13:01 to play. The Chargers (8-2, 4-1 NEAC) cut the deficit to three and four a few times, but the Storm still led, 43-37 with 5:42 to play after a layup from Jessica Bandrowski.
From that point however, the Chargers took over, led by
Lauren Heliger,
Aubrey Folger and
Sarah Heilenman. The Chargers scored 21 of the game's final 28 points, many of which came off of great possessions on the offensive side of the floor as well as big stops on the defensive side of floor.
"I thought the defense hung tough and kept us in the game until the offense showed up," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said.
After Folger put the Chargers up, 48-46 with 2:49 to play, Keuka missed a three-pointer and turned the ball over twice on its next three possessions. The next time they scored was with 34 seconds to play to trim the Chargers' lead from six to four. Folger, Heliger and
Emily Lloyd hit both free throws down the stretch and capped one of the Chargers' best wins this season.
"I think our hustle took us over the top," Helsel said. "I think we did a lot of the little things that don't show up in the box score. We chased after loose balls and did a good job on the offensive glass."
Heliger finished with 18 points, while Folger added 15 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Lloyd finished with 12 points and eight boards, while Heilenman had six points and 10 boards.
The Chargers will play five of their next six games on the road, beginning with Wednesday's game at Gallaudet. LBC defeated the Bison, 51-38 on December 8 in Lancaster.
