Box Score After a grueling 110 minutes of soccer on Friday afternoon against Wells, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team had to take the field 21 hours later and face Keuka on Saturday afternoon at Charger Field. The Storm, who did not play Friday, arrived with fresh legs and were coming off two straight wins.
Â
In a game that featured several good scoring chances by each team, it was a pair of freshmen who gave the Chargers the boost and goal they needed to improve their postseason chances with three weeks left in the regular season.
Â
After a scoreless first half in which Keuka possessed the ball for much of the 45 minutes, the Chargers opened the second half with several good scoring chances and with 28 minutes left, freshman
Branden Peiffer streaked down the field and found fellow freshman
Matt Nargi with a pass just inside the box.
Â
As the Storm defense and goalkeeper converged on Nargi, he slipped the ball through Keuka goalkeeper, Preston Vick to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
Â
"What a great play by not only Peiffer to possess the ball down the field and make a great pass, but by Nargi as well to quickly get a shot off," Chargers Head Coach
Tom Ardt said.
Â
Keuka had more chances in the final 25 minutes, including hitting the crossbar and a goal that was called back due to an offside call. However, it was the Chargers who held possession in the final two minutes and would not let the Storm generate anymore offense.
Â
The 1-0 win improves the Chargers to 2-1-1 in NEAC play and gives them the successful weekend (1-0-1) they were looking for.
Â
"It's nice to get the points and we need to keep improving," Ardt said. "This puts us in a good spot, but we have another big week next week."
Â
LBC outshot the Storm (4-4-1, 0-3 NEAC), 15-13 and held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks. The win is LBC's fourth of the season, matching their win total from 2012. It was also the Chargers' first win over Keuka since defeating the Storm, 2-0 in the NEAC Quarterfinals in 2011.
Â
The Chargers open the week with non-conference foe Rosemont, before returning home to take on Penn St. Abington on Wednesday and SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday.
Â
Monday's game at Rosemont is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
