Box Score The magical late-season run by the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team came to a screeching halt on Thursday night in Kissimmee, Florida as the Chargers lost to top-seed and two-time defending champion Moody Bible, 1-0 in overtime.
After playing the Archers tough for the full 90 minutes of regulation, the Chargers couldn't hold off Moody Bible any longer as they scored 34 seconds into overtime and will defend their title against Northland International on Saturday.
"I'm really, really proud of the team's effort tonight," Chargers Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "Moody is a strong team and we fought every minute and didn't allow them to create many good chances."
Prior to overtime, the Archers had their best chance of the game as the Chargers were called for a handball in the box with 2:51 to play in regulation. The Archers were awarded a penalty kick, but Lancaster Bible sophomore goalkeeper
Stefan Smith made one of the biggest saves of his career and kept the game scoreless.Â
"Our back line won balls, cleared balls and did a good job of preventing their forwards from attacking successfully," Ardt said. "Our center midfielders played really well under high pressure and our forwards had some good opportunities too."
Despite the loss, Ardt said he couldn't be more proud of the team and the effort they put forth.
"I'm proud to coach these young men and I'm thankful for great assistant coaches," Ardt said. "I'm excited for the future of this program. To come down here and be able to achieve the best finish in program history is a big deal. I look forward to the work that we will put in during the offseason as we get stronger as a team as we continue to push for the NEAC Championship and NCCAA Championship."
Thursday's loss sends the Chargers (7-11-3) into the NCCAA Third Place Game where they will take on Providence (Canada) at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Notes:
-The overtime loss is the first for the Chargers since they lost in double overtime to Cazenovia on Sept. 8, 2012.
-All of the eight teams at the National Tournament have Friday off before the final games are played on Saturday.
