Box Score Though the final score did not go in their favor, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team passed an early season test as they battled back and forth with powerhouse Eastern Mennonite. Though the Royals won, 82-64, the Chargers made them earn every point as Lancaster Bible cut a 23-point second half deficit to nine with 6:15 to play before the Royals took over down the stretch.
Aubrey Folger and
Shanice Smith played very well once again as they each had 18 points. Folger added 10 rebounds, while Smith had nine. Junior
Sarah Heilenman had 10 points and six boards as well, while
Brooklyn Wilson had 12 points.
"Both Aubrey and Shy played really well again," Chargers Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "Aubrey carried us in the first half, while Shy propelled us in the second half. I thought Sarah made some really nice plays toward the basket tonight as well."
EMU led, 44-28 at the break and increased the lead to 60-37 with 14:56 to play. The Chargers did not quit however and began chipping away at the deficit. Wilson's jumper with 6:15 to play made it 67-58, but LBC, despite continuing to play well, went cold from the floor and could not maintain the scoring run.
"We had a great run midway through the second half, but just couldn't maintain the scoring," Helsel said. "We kept doing things well, we just didn't convert much towards the end of the half."
Helsel said he was happy with the team's performances this weekend, especially on Saturday against such a good opponent.Â
"EMU is a good team and I think we hung in there pretty well," Helsel said. "It was nice to see our players play well against good competition."
The Chargers (1-1) are off until next Saturday when they host Eastern at 1 p.m. Lancaster Bible defeated the Eagles, 64-56 last season to open the season.
