Chargers Pounce on Nittany Lions

Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team rebounded from their debacle of a second half against Eastern on Saturday, by scoring 48 points in the first half en route to a 79-42 thrashing of Penn St. Abington on Tuesday night at Horst Athletic Center.

After shooting 1-for-24 in the second half of Saturday's loss to Eastern, the Chargers were 15-of-31 [48.4%] from the floor in the first half against the Nittany Lions and just like Saturday's first half, were led by Katy Stover who had 19 points in the opening 20 minutes as the Chargers raced out to a 48-17 halftime lead.

Stover finished with 29 points, the most since Lauren Heliger scored 29 points in last season's season opener at Eastern on November 17, 2012. Combined with her 21 from Saturday, Stover has 50 points over the past two games and now leads the Chargers with 14.8 points per game.

"We as coaches know Katy is capable of scoring points in bunches, we don't expect it, but we know she can do it," Chargers Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "She is another weapon we have offensively and she gets it as a player."

The Chargers' lead grew to over 40 points for much of the second half, thus everyone was able to play and everyone recorded at least one point. Helsel said he hopes the team will use games like this to better their play, even if the outcome of the game is never in doubt.

"It's important for everyone to develop good habits during games because everyone has areas they need to improve on," Helsel said. "I don't think we're even close to our potential yet and even if the score isn't close, we can be doing things as a team to get closer to our potential."

Sophomore Aubrey Folger added nine points, five steals and five rebounds for the Chargers (2-2, 1-0 NEAC), while junior Sarah Heilenman had eight points and three boards. With the Chargers having a week before their next game and a few days off for Thanksgiving, Helsel said it was important for two-sport athletes like Folger, Heilenman, Christy Lorah and Kirsten Webster to get some time off since they basically jumped right into basketball from volleyball or soccer.

"Selfishly, I wish we could keep practicing, but it will be good to get everyone some rest," Helsel said.

Kirsten Webster, playing in her first game of the season, added six points for the Chargers, while Emily Martz and Christy Lorah also added six points.

Lancaster Bible will face NEAC foe Wilson next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Horst Athletic Center.
