Chargers End Semester with Victory

Box Score Whatever Lancaster Bible sophomore Katy Stover has on her Christmas list, she should get it. Stover poured in 32 points, which included seven three-pointers, to help Lancaster Bible defeat former North Eastern Athletic Conference foe Penn St. Harrisburg, 80-65 at Horst Athletic Center.

Stover had 22 points in the first half on 8-of-11 shooting and was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. She was held scoreless for much of the second half and didn't score points 23 and 24 until she hit two free throws with 4:58 to play. Stover got hot again though and had eight more points down the stretch to help the Chargers overcome 29 turnovers to defeat the Nittany Lions for the second straight time. Stover's 32 points are the most since Jodi London scored 38 on November 14, 1986 and she becomes just the seventh women's basketball player to score 32 or more points in a single game. Jill London has the most points in a game with 41 on December 11, 1984 against United Wesleyan.

The game itself was a sloppy one as the teams combined for 55 turnovers and 46 fouls. While Stover went cold during the first part of the second half, fellow sophomore Aubrey Folger took over as she scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half. Folger was 7-of-9 from the floor in the second half and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

"When we have players shooting like Katy and Aubrey did tonight, it makes my job easy," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We were confident we could score points tonight and I think we took a lot of high percentage shots, which is nice."

Thanks in part to their 68 percent [13-of-19] shooting in the second half, the Chargers were able to shoot 51 percent [26-of-51] from the floor for the game, while holding Penn St. Harrisburg to just 35.8 percent [24-of-67] shooting.

"They been scoring a decent amount of points lately, so it was nice to be able to control the tempo of the game for most of the night and be able to play our game and not let them dictate play like they have in the past against us," Helsel said.

Junior Shanice Smith added eight points and 15 rebounds for the Chargers who improved to 5-2 this season. Sarah Heilenman added nine points, while Brooklyn Wilson had eight points and seven assists.

Because of the impending weather on Saturday, Lancaster Bible's game at Baptist Bible was moved to February 3, 2014 at 7 p.m. Thus, Friday was the Chargers' final game of the semester, something that Helsel wishes weren't true.

"I told the ladies I hated to see them go, because I think we are starting to figure things out offensively and we are playing pretty good defense," Helsel said. "I wish we could play a couple more."

Nevertheless, the Chargers are off until January 4, 2014 when they will face another tough non-conference opponent in Rosemont. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Rosemont, Pa.

Notes:
-The LBC win ties up the all-time series with the Nittany Lions at 6-6.

-Penn St. Harrisburg is now a member of the Capital Athletic Conference after leaving the NEAC following the 2012-13 season.
