Balanced Chargers Stop Wildcats

Box Score Playing its final game before Finals Week, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team took care of business on Friday night at Horst Athletic Center as they defeated Cazenovia, 73-49. Junior Shanice Smith took over parts of the game en route to 18 points and 18 rebounds, while three other players also scored in double digits, including senior Brooklyn Wilson who had a season-high 17 points.

Friday's game began slowly as the Chargers led only 13-7 with 13:47 remaining. From there however, the Chargers began taking over the game as they went on a 10-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 23-9 lead with 6:30 to play in the opening half. The lead would increase to 17 points (34-17) at one point before the Chargers entered halftime with a 36-21 lead.

Cazenovia hung tough in the second half and closed the deficit to 11 points at 51-40 with 10:17 to play, but Smith and sophomore Aubrey Folger, who finished with 16 points and nine boards, proved to be too much and the Chargers eventually pulled away as they went on a 19-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 70-42 lead with just over two minutes to play.

Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said he was pleased with the team's effort in the second half as it was something the team talked about prior to the game and at halftime.

"We didn't dominate in the second half, but we didn't coast and we played hard, which is something we haven't been able to do in a couple of games this season in the second half," Helsel said. "I thought the ladies took care of business and I was happy with the balanced scoring and balanced shots."

Helsel said he liked that even though the shooting wasn't there for much of the night, the team grinded out a win, something that will come in handy later in the year when fatigue sets in.

"We rode what we had tonight and that was rebounding and Shanice for much of the night," Helsel said. "I think Shy is still working towards where she will end up being and she still played really well tonight, especially against two six-footers."

Smith finished with eight offensive rebounds, which was two more than the entire Cazenovia roster pulled down.

Freshman Mary Salo led the Wildcats (0-8, 0-3 NEAC) with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Chargers (4-2, 3-0 NEAC) are off for a week before they host former NEAC foe, Penn St. Harrisburg, next Friday at 7 p.m. The Nittany Lions now play in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Notes:
-Smith's other double-double this season was also an 18-rebound effort as she added 26 points as well against Penn St. Fayette in the Chargers' season opener on November 15.

-Lancaster Bible has now won 11 straight regular season NEAC games dating back to last season and has not lost a home NEAC contest since February 15, 2012 when they lost to St. Elizabeth.
