Penn St. Abington Outlasts Chargers, 68-59

Box Score It just felt like a game Lancaster Bible should have won. They led in almost all of the statistical categories, had several big plays and a large crowd behind them. Time and time again though, Penn St. Abington hit a shot when they needed to or got to the free throw line and knocked down two at the line.

Despite all of their efforts, the Chargers couldn't get over the hump and lost to the Nittany Lions, 68-59 on Senior Night at Horst Athletic Center. Mike Marvin had a game-high 22 points to lead four Abington players in double figures. Max Alton added 18 points and four assists for the Nittany Lions, while Avery Barnes had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The teams battled back and forth for most of the game before Abington opened up a nine-point lead, 61-52 with 4:24 to play in the second half. LBC senior Keith Keltner cut the deficit to seven before CJ Dunston's free throw and Corey Leonard's jumper cut to it four with 2:41 to play.

Just 50 seconds later, Dunston stole the ball on the defensive end and drove the length of the floor and threw down a thunderous dunk that sent the Horst Athletic Center crowd into a frenzy with 1:41 to go and the Chargers down just two points, 61-59.

Abington turned the ball over on its next possession as well, but LBC couldn't tie the game. Barnes hit both free throws on Abington's next possession and after the Chargers came up empty on their next possession and had to foul, the Nittany Lions put the game away with three free throws on their next two possessions.

"We can't ask for much more," LBC Head Coach Marshall Tague said. "I thought we played pretty well, but the little things add up and it cost us."

The little things Tague referred to are missed opportunities, costly turnovers and some clutch shooting from unexpected sources for Abington. The Nittany Lions' RJ Handy came into the game with just seven three pointers for the year. He was 3-for-6 on Wednesday night.

"It just felt like a game we were going to win," Tague said. "We couldn't get over the hump though. The positive is, that team is in first place in our division and we were with them the whole time and in my opinion better than them at times. It shows we can play with anyone in this conference, which gives us confidence."

Keltner finished the game with 16 points, while fellow senior Dan Karl added 15 points. LBC's third and final senior, Caleb Graves had two points and four rebounds.

"We are so thankful for these seniors," Tague said. They have been leading well, especially down the stretch."

The Chargers (4-20, 3-10 NEAC) will wrap-up the regular season on Friday when they visit Penn St. Berks at 8 p.m. LBC awaits the winner of the Cairn/Valley Forge Christian NCCAA East Region Semifinal in next Friday's NCCAA East Region Final. The Chargers will host that game at 7 p.m. on February 22.
