Box Score If you think you had a good Wednesday night, it wasn't as good as Lancaster Bible senior
Lauren Heliger's night, I promise.
After scoring a game-high 24 points in the Chargers', 62-34 drubbing of Penn St. Abington on Senior Night, Heliger's boyfriend, Andrew Turner, popped the question during Senior Night festivities and two are now engaged after she said yes.
The game itself wasn't much of one as the Chargers held Abington to just 15 first-half points and took a 30-15 lead into halftime. The Chargers continued to pour it on early in the second half as they opened the half on a 14-3 run over the first 7:22 to take a 44-18 lead.
In addition to her 24 points, Heliger added six assists and five rebounds, while freshman
Aubrey Folger had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Sarah Heilenman added 10 points and six boards, while LBC's other senior,
Emily Lloyd, had eight points and six rebounds.
"I think the momentum and confidence we have right now is good, but there are still things that we need to fine tune as we head into the postseason," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "I think we need to continue to have better habits and make sure we aren't reaching and standing around."
Wednesday's win clinches a perfect home record during the regular season for LBC at 13-0. It is the first time in program history the team has gone undefeated at home.
"At the beginning of the season, I told the ladies I thought we could win 10 games at home, but after the game tonight, I apologized to them for selling them short," Helsel joked.
The win moves LBC (19-4, 14-2 NEAC) to within one win of clinching the NEAC South Division and the top spot in the NEAC playoffs. Helsel said that while the team obviously wants to play at home, that doesn't give them a free pass in the playoffs.
"It doesn't matter where we play," Helsel said. "We still need to play well and play our game. You don't get 10 extra points for playing at home. You still need to take care of business and do the little things right."
The Chargers have two games remaining in the regular season as they will take on Penn St. Berks on Friday night and St. Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon. LBC will host Valley Forge Christian or Cairn in the NCCAA East Region Final on Wednesday, February 20 at 7 p.m. The Chargers are searching for their first NCCAA East Region title since the 2002-03 season.
