Chargers Halt Express, Advance to NEAC Final

Box Score One down, one to go.

The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team took care of business on Saturday, dispatching North Division upstart Wells, 69-50, to advance to the North Eastern Athletic Conference Final for the first time in program history. Chargers' freshman Aubrey Folger had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Lancaster Bible, while senior Lauren Heliger added 20 points, four boards and four assists for the Chargers who won their ninth straight game.

For the first 10 minutes of the game, the teams battled back-and-forth, but LBC took the game over with a 12-0 run over a five minute span to open up a 30-16 lead with 5:38 to play. Heliger and Folger had 10 of the 12 points on the run and the Chargers were off and running to a 38-19 halftime lead. Folger had 16 points and eight rebounds in the opening half and had several moments where she simply took the game over.

"She played unbelievable today," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "She had no turnovers, three assists and three steals and then you add in all of the points and rebounds, it's just remarkable."

Wells could not muster a second half comeback and the Chargers opened up a 25-point lead on two different occasions before winning by 19. Ashley Roser, the NEAC Player of the Year, led the Express with 28 points and 20 rebounds. She accounted for 10 of the 16 field goals Wells made from the field as the rest of the team shot 6-of-41 (14.6%).

"I thought our defense was solid," Helsel said. "Roser's going to get her points, we knew that coming in, but I thought we really clamped down and did a good job."

Sarah Heilenman had eight points and five rebounds for LBC as well on Saturday, while Brooklyn Wilson added seven points, a team-high five assists and five rebounds.

The Chargers (23-4) will take on Keuka in Sunday's NEAC Final. The Storm handled Penn St. Harrisburg in the day's second semifinal, 81-68 to set up a battle between the conference's two best teams. LBC won the regular season matchup, dealing Keuka their only conference loss, with a 58-50 victory on January 7. Helsel knows it will be a battle on Sunday.

"We have high respect for them," Helsel said. "They are the two-time defending NEAC champs and have really good guards. We need stops defensively and need to execute on the offensive side of the floor."

Helsel was happy to see after the semifinal game that his team was already preparing and talking about Sunday.

"They are excited and ready to go," Helsel said. " I feel like I  need a nap, but their ready to go already."

The Chargers and Storm will tip-off at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Horst Athletic Center with a trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament on the line.

One to go.
