Heliger Sets Scoring Record in Chargers', 69-40 Victory

Box Score Lancaster Bible senior Lauren Heliger broke the program-record for points in a career on Saturday as she scored her 1,384th point in the Chargers', 69-40 victory over Wilson at Horst Athletic Center. Heliger finished the day with 26 points and eight assists as LBC improved to 12-0 at home this season and 18-4 overall.

Needing 21 points entering the game, Heliger scored 14 in the first half and with 15:28 to play in the second half, took a pass from Sarah Heilenman and nailed a jumper from the just outside the lane. The previous mark of 1,383 was held by Jill London who played for the Chargers from 1983-1987.

"It's awesome to break the record, but it's even better because we are having such a successful season," Heliger said. "It's not just me, it's everyone getting involved and I wouldn't have wanted to do this with another group of girls."

The game itself was not much of one as the Chargers scored the game's first 22 points. Wilson did not score until senior Tara Fields sunk two free throws with 10:14 remaining in the first half. LBC Head Coach Doug Helsel was happy with the team's effort, especially after such an emotional win on Thursday when the Chargers defeated arch-rival Valley Forge Christian, 49-46.

"We executed early and played well on the defensive side of the floor," Helsel said. "We were patient and let them make a lot of the mistakes. We've been talking about being patient and just playing tough defense and today we did that."

LBC sophomore Sarah Heilenman added 14 points and seven rebounds on 7-of-9 shooting, while freshman Aubrey Folger had 10 points and six boards as the Chargers improved to 13-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

The Chargers are off until Wednesday when they will host Penn St. Abington at 6 p.m. It is the regular season home finale and will be Senior Night. LBC will honor Heliger and Emily Lloyd after the game.

While they are off until Wednesday, the Chargers will play three times in four nights to end the week as they travel to Penn St. Berks on Friday and St. Elizabeth on Saturday.

"I think the key is not killing ourselves on Monday and Tuesday," Helsel said. "I think it's one of the toughest parts of coaching. We want to keep the momentum from this week going, but we know we need the rest for the three games in four days next week."

In the end, the day belonged to Heliger and Helsel said he couldn't be happier for her.

"She's just such a fun player to watch," Helsel said. "She has great athleticism and this year we asked her to play a bit of a different role because we have more scorers than in the past. She has taken to it very well and realized that having more scorers on the team would only help her. Her dishing out eight assists today is as big for me as her breaking the record. She has become a great all-around player."

Notes:
-In addition to Senior Night on Wednesday, a win will mark the first time in program history that the Chargers will have gone undefeated at home.

-Heliger now has 1,389 points for her career. She also had over 1,000 kills during her four-year women's volleyball career.
