Struggles Continue for Chargers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After narrowly missing out on a doubleheader sweep last Saturday at Penn St. Berks, the Lancaster Bible baseball team had hoped its one win over Berks would help turn their season around and get them headed in the right direction. Gallaudet made sure to stop that train right in its tracks on Thursday as the Bison swept the Chargers in Washington, D.C. The Bison took game one, 8-2 and used a nine-run fifth inning to erase an 8-2 deficit in game two to secure an 11-8 victory.

Chargers' senior Justin Long took the hill for LBC in game one and just like in his previous six appearances this season, Long got little to no run support as he fell to 0-6. In his six starts this season, the Chargers have scored just seven runs during the innings Long has been on the hill. To break it down further, LBC has scored seven runs in the 33 innings Long has pitched, while in the other nine innings of the games Long as started, but not pitched, the Chargers have scored 11 runs.

Frank DiFilippo and Matt Taliercio were the lone bright spots for LBC in game one as they each had two hits. DiFilippo also hit his first home run of the season in game one, while Micah McClay scored a run.

In game two, the LBC offense woke up as three players had two or more hits. Kody Godsey was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Tim Landis, Jr. and Richard Westerlund each had two hits. Landis, DiFilippo and Nate Long each scored twice in game two and it appeared LBC would earn a hard-fought split with the Bison. Gallaudet hung around however and used a nine-run fifth inning to turn a six-run deficit into a three-run lead.

Gallaudet sent 14 batters to the plate in the fifth inning as they pounded five hits and were aided by one LBC error en route to nine runs. The Chargers put two runners on in the sixth, but could not score and went down in order in the seventh.

LBC (5-14, 1-5 NEAC0 returns to the diamond on Saturday when they take on conference-leading Penn St. Harrisburg at 1 p.m. in Middletown, Pa.
