The Lancaster Bible men's and women's tennis teams celebrated Senior Day on Thursday at Linden Hall School in Lititz, Pa., but unfortunately for the Chargers, the pre-match festivities marked the only time LBC had much to cheer about. Penn St. Harrisburg swept a dual match from the Chargers as the men won, 8-1 and the women, 5-4.
Both Nittany Lion teams won two of the three doubles matches, but took different paths to victory. Lancaster Bible hung on in the women's match all day as
Moriah Pelton,
Kacie Scott and
Tiffany Wolf picked up singles victories for the Chargers. Scott and Wolf also won their number three doubles match to get LBC on the board, but Harrisburg got the points it needed at number one, two and four singles to hang on for the victory.
Scott hung on for just her second win of the 2012-13 season as she took the first set, 6-1, but dropped the second, 6-3. Because the match had already been decided, she played a super tie-breaker, instead of a full set and won, 10-7. Pelton, playing in just her second match this season, improved to 2-0 in singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
While the LBC women stayed in the match for much of the day, the LBC men saw their chances for victory fade quickly. After seniors
Jeremy Davis and
Alex Ko earned the Chargers a doubles' point with an 8-5 win at number two doubles, LBC could not earn another as the Nittany Lions, a strong team year-in-and-year-out, put their foot on the gas and cruised to the easy win.
Though Davis improved to 8-2 overall this year in doubles play, he dropped his first singles match of the spring season with a 6-2, 6-4 loss at number four singles. Davis is now 8-2 in singles as well and will look to rebound on Saturday when both teams travel North to take on Cazenovia at 12 p.m.
In addition to honoring Ko and Davis on the men's side, senior
Kayla Nachtigal was also recognized for her four years as a member of the Chargers' tennis program. She dropped both her matches on Thursday, but has been a bright spot of the LBC women's tennis program for four years now.
The men's team will play their final four regular season matches on the road, while the women will play their final five matches on the road.
