Taliercio's Historic Day Can't Shelter Chargers From the Storm

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible baseball team has found just about every way to lose a baseball game this season. From costly errors to being shutout to simply being outscored, the Chargers have done it all. Until Saturday anyway.

Keuka scored in their final at-bat in both games, one a walk-off home run, one a walk-off double as they defeated LBC, 6-5 and 10-9 to sweep a doubleheader and drop the Chargers to 7-20 overall and 1-11 in NEAC play.

The game two loss was especially tough as the Chargers led 9-5 heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning. Rubbing salt into the wound was the loss ruined arguably the best game by an individual in LBC history as Matt Taliercio hit three home runs and was 5-for-5. He knocked in five of the nine LBC runs and scored four runs. The three home runs tied the LBC mark for homers in a game as Paul Greco accomplished the feat last season against Gallaudet on April 5. That day, Greco was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and six RBI.

In game one, the Chargers trailed 5-3 heading into the top of the seventh, but Keuka committed three errors in the inning, allowing the Chargers to knot the game at 5-5. Keuka's first batter in the bottom half of the inning, Gavin Corbin, ended the game with one swing of the bat as he drove Matt Taliercio's pitch over the wall for the game-winner.

Matt's cousin, Brian Taliercio, had two of the four LBC hits in game one, while Peter Shue and Nate Long had the other two hits. Justin Long pitched five strong innings as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits, while striking out two and walking two.

In game two, the Chargers led for most of the game as Taliercio doubled in the first and second innings and hit three straight home runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. The dingers in the fourth and seventh were two-run home runs, while the sixth inning homer was a solo shot.

The trouble began right away in the bottom of the seventh as starter Micah McClay walked the leadoff hitter. McClay was replaced by Richard Westerlund who gave up four hits, two of which blooped just past the outstretched infielder's arms. After two runs crossed the plate to make it, 9-7, Westerlund got an out from a fielder's choice and then struck out game one hero, Gavin Corbin. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jon Borchert hit a bases clearing double to score the winning runs and send LBC to their fouth straight loss.

Kody Godsey added two hits for LBC in the game two, while Josiah Weaver, Sean Westerlund and Tim Landis, Jr. also had hits for LBC.

In six games this week, Taliercio was 9-for-18 (.500 avg.), with six home runs, 10 runs scored and 11 runs driven in. He is batting .402 this season and leads the NEAC with nine home runs. He has also driven in 31 runs thus far.

The Chargers are off until Friday when they host The King's College for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
