Box Score 2 Playing their second doubleheader in as many days, the Lancaster Bible baseball team earned its first North Eastern Athletic Conference win of the season as they took game one from Penn St. Berks, 7-5 before the Nittany Lions battled back to win game two, 8-7.
Micah McClay earned his second win of the season in game one, pitching a complete game to help snap a five-game losing streak for the Chargers. McClay scattered 10 hits over seven innings, while striking out two and walking two.
Sean Westerlund was 2-for-3 with a run scored for LBC, while six other players had one hit, including
Frank DiFilippo who knocked in two runs.
The Chargers trailed by scores of 3-0 and 4-1 before rallying to tie the game in the fifth inning. Each team scored a run in the sixth, and
Caleb Mayer's bunt single with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh gave LBC a 6-5 lead and
Jake Ritchey's sac fly gave them an insurance run a batter later.
"A great team effort," Chargers' Assistant Coach
Mike Freeman said. "No one really stood out offensively, but everyone did their part to make sure we got the win. Micah was great on the hill."
Game two played out differently as the Chargers led three separate times, but let Berks come back each time. The Nittany Lions took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but LBC tied the game in the top half of the sixth on a single by
Nate Long that scored
Matt Taliercio.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Berks scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Taliercio who had come in, in relief of starter
Caleb Mayer. Long and DiFilippo each had three hits for LBC in game two as the Chargers out hit the Nittany Lions, 12-4.
With his four hits over the two games, Long's average is above .400 once again as he is now batting .407. Taliercio eclipsed the 20-RBI mark as well on Saturday.
The Chargers (5-12, 1-3 NEAC) return to the diamond on Friday when they travel to the Nation's Capital to take on Gallaudet at 1 p.m.
