Chargers Fall to Cairn in East Region Final

Box Score The Lancaster Bible baseball team saw its season come to an end on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at Charger Field as Cairn had an answer for the Chargers inning-after-inning and held on for a 16-13 victory in the NCCAA East Region Final. The Highlanders advance to the NCCAA Division II World Series which will be played next week in Mason, Ohio.

Cairn (9-30) was off and running from the top of the first as they scored a run in both the first and second innings and then scored three more times in the top of the third thanks to Caleb Lang's three-run homer over the left field wall.

LBC cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Caleb Mayer doubled home two runs. Cairn answered right back in the top of the fifth however as Lang hit his second home run of the game, a two-run homer this time, and Austin Arseneau followed that with a home run of his own. The back-to-back home runs gave the Highlanders an 8-2 lead after 4 1/2 innings of play.

The Chargers did not quit however as they plated five runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 8-7. Mayer once again played a leading role in the comeback as he singled home Ricky Bisch and Frank DiFilippo. Mayer then scored  when Brian Taliercio singled two batters later.

Cairn was able to snatch the momentum back in the top of the sixth with five runs of their own as the Chargers could not keep the game going in their favor. Ken Searle's two-run single was the big play of the inning as the Highlanders regained their six-run lead and led 13-7.

DiFilippo singled home Micah McClay in the bottom half of the inning to close the gap to 13-8. Both teams would go scoreless in the seventh, but Cairn regained its six-run lead in the top of the eighth when Jon Sanville singled home Arseneau.

The Chargers put together their second five-run inning of the game in the bottom of the eighth as Matt Taliercio hit a three-run home run to close the gap to 14-11. Bisch scored on a wild pitch a few batters later and Mayer beat the throw home on the next play to make it 14-13 on Tim Landis, Jr.'s fielder's choice.

Trailing by just one again, the Chargers needed to hold the Highlanders in the ninth, but as had happened in every inning but one, LBC allowed the first Cairn batter of the inning to reach base and once again, the Highlanders made LBC pay.

Dan Rendon's fielder's choice plated one run and with the next batter at the plate, Chad Hollinger scored on a passed ball to give Cairn a 16-13 lead.

Nate Long led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, but LBC's 3-4-5 hitters went down in order and the Highlanders won their second East Region title in three years. (They were Philadelphia Biblical when the won in 2011.)

Senior Frank DiFilippo went 3-for-6 in his final collegiate game, while Caleb Mayer was 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Taliercio finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. His home run was his 11th of the season which sets a new LBC record.

LBC finished the season with a 7-24 record and says goodbye to seniors Justin Long, Sean Westerlund, Richard Westerlund, Jerel Chavis, Tim Landis, Jr. and Frank DiFIlippo.

Notes:
-Three players with the first name of Caleb started for the teams on Saturday and Caleb Lang, Caleb Moore and Caleb Mayer went a combined 6-for-13 with 10 RBI and six runs scored.
