Box Score Another game, another zero on the board. The recent offensive woes for the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team got worse on Wednesday as the Chargers lost to longtime rival Cairn, 2-0 at Charger Field in front of a large crowd that had little to cheer about.
The Highlanders frustrated the Chargers for much of the day and converted their two offensive chances into goals, something Lancaster Bible hasn't done in 10 days. Cairn's Jeremy McAlack scored with 1:17 to play in the first half to propel the Highlanders to a 1-0 halftime lead. McAlack scored off a great pass from Craig Kikendall for his first goal of the season.
The Chargers had chances in the first half, including two corner kicks, but could not convert.
"I think it was a combination of being over-emotional and then lazy that really hurt us for a lot of the game," Chargers Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We just didn't adjust mentally to what we had to do."
The second half saw the Chargers waste several more scoring chances and it was Cairn who gave themselves some breathing room seven minutes into the half when Justin Nolan chipped the ball past LBC goalkeeper
Stefan Smith and into the back of the net. McAlack's great cross to Nolan froze Smith for just a split second that gave Nolan time to chip the ball past him.
LBC (1-4-1) fought on, but too many crossing passes failed to reach their intended target and the Highlanders kept the ball in the midfield for good parts of the second half.
"We didn't put our chances away and they did," Ardt said. "We weren't very smart with some decisions and we need to find a way to score."
Cairn (3-3) outshot the Chargers, 16-9 while both teams had four corner kicks. Smith ended the game with four saves for the Chargers, while Cairn's goalkeeper Dave Shaffer made eight stops.
LBC is back in action on Saturday when they face former NEAC foe, Penn St. Harrisburg at 2 p.m. in Middletown, Pa.
Notes:
-Cairn is now 41-11-5 all-time against LBC and has won 10 straight at LBC.
-The last time LBC was shutout three straight times was 2006 when they ended the season with four straight games in which they didn't score.
