Second Half Surge Powers Chargers Past Defenders

Box Score Things appeared to be going the way they had gone the past two weeks for the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team on Tuesday in Clarks Summit, Pa. The Chargers were down 1-0 at halftime, offensive chances here and there, but nothing to show for it and the opponent had taken advantage of one of their chances and were now in a position to protect the lead.

And then, 42 seconds into the second half, the Chargers did something they had only done once in the previous two weeks - they scored a goal. Three minutes later, they did something they had only done two other times this season - they scored again.

Sophomore Bradley Wilcox collected a pass from senior Kevin Forsyth and drove the ball past Baptist Bible goalkeeper Dillon Bowman to tie the game within the first minute of the second half and Josiah Groff collected a rebound three minutes later and blasted a ball into the back of the net to give LBC a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish as they defeated the Defenders by the same score.

"The guys came out in the second half determined to make a statement and they did," Chargers Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "I thought we played well in the first half except for about 10 minutes or so, but we played even better in the second half and the guys really wanted it."

Ardt said the Chargers applied great pressure on the Defenders all game, something that had been missing in their games of late.

"We were going forward with the ball and had some great play by our midfielders," Ardt said. "I thought we put really good pressure on BBC all game long."

For the game, LBC outshot the Defenders, 14-9 and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Ardt said a lot of guys stepped up with their play and leadership throughout the game, especially in the waning moments of the game.

"Defensively I thought we played well with the lead, especially in the final 10 minutes," Ardt said. "We had great leadership from the guys on the field and Jordan Harbin and Stefan Smith played really well for us in the second half."

LBC's victory means they will host at least one NCCAA East Region playoff game in late October. Barring an upset win by Valley Forge Christian, the Chargers will be the second seed in the East Region playoffs and will likely host Baptist Bible in the semifinals, while Valley Forge Christian will take on top-seeded Cairn.

The win also improves LBC to 2-5-1 this season as they will prepare for one of their hardest tests of the season on Saturday when they host Widener at 3 p.m.
