Widener Outlasts Lancaster Bible on Homecoming

Box Score For 57 minutes, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team played step-for-step with Widener and the Homecoming match that many feared could be a blowout had the makings of being very special. Three and a half minutes later, the Pride had taken the wind out of the Chargers' sails.

Eric Taylor and Matt Parrotta scored 3:47 apart to break a scoreless tie and helped lead the Pride past LBC, 2-0 on Saturday at Charger Field. The loss was the third straight for LBC on Homecoming as the Chargers fell to 2-6-1 this season.

In the first half, the Chargers and Pride were even as both teams enjoyed multiple scoring chances. LBC's best chance by Josiah Groff went just wide, while Widener hit the crossbar with a few minutes left in the half.

Widener began pressing in the second half and were rewarded with Taylor's goal at 57:35. He collected the ball and fired a shot from 23 yards out that found the back of the net. Parrotta followed that up with a goal off two nice passes from Matt Montera and Taylor. Parrotta's goal was a blast into the top left-hand corner that Chargers Head Coach Tom Ardt said LBC would like to have back.

"We had little lapses in marking during the second half and it cost us," Ardt said. "We need to realize how important it is to not allow that second goal. That second goal lets the other team play completely different."

Overall Ardt thought the team played well and worked hard, but was a bit troubled by some of the chemistry issues in the second half.

"Some of the blaming and finger pointing we had in the second half will never be acceptable at LBC, let alone this far into the season," Ardt said. "Guys need to step up and be responsible for both good and bad plays."

Ardt said he continues to be impressed with goalkeeper Stefan Smith's play.

"Stefan made some big stops for us back there and he continues to be a leader on the field for us," Ardt said of Smith who had two saves on the day.

Ardt also mentioned the Chargers' offense and their need for more chances.

"We need to put more pressure on opponents and be more dangerous in their end of the field," Ardt said. "We made Widener uncomfortable at times, but not enough,"

The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Valley Forge Christian at 4 p.m.
