Box Score The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team hosted its home opener on Wednesday and tied a solid Berkeley (N.J.) squad, 1-1 at Charger Field.
After giving up an early goal to the Knights, the Chargers (0-1-1) calmed down and had plenty of scoring chances over the 110 minutes of play. LBC finally broke through with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half when
Kurt Keltner was tripped up in the box and the Chargers were awarded a penalty kick.
Senior
Kevin Forsyth stepped up and buried a goal into the right-hand side of the net to knot the game at 1-1. A full half and two 10-minute overtime periods after Forsyth's goal could not decide a winner as LBC opened the home portion of their schedule with a tie for the just fourth time in 41 years.
"Physically, this is great for us to get an overtime game this early in the season," Chargers Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "It was a good test for us to see where we are physically and we came through with no injuries and the guys really played well."
Ardt was especially pleased with the team's self-control in a very physical game that got testy a few times late in the second half and in overtime. Berkeley finished the game with five cards, including a straight red card.
"They are a physical team, but we played them tough and I'm proud of the guys for handling themselves the way they did on the field," Ardt said.Â
Forsyth's penalty kick goal was the first of his collegiate career and his fifth career goal overall.
"Kevin stepped up and wanted to take the shot," Ardt said. "It's nice to see him step up and say, 'I got this' to the other guys."
LBC is off until Monday when they will open up NEAC play against Penn St. Berks. Despite not having a win yet in two tries, Ardt said the early season battles with Moravian (3-2 loss) and Berkeley will go a long way the rest of the season.
"I think we know what we want to accomplish on the field each game," Ardt said. "We understand the style of play we need to have and I think we have done a good job executing that thus far."
The Chargers will host the Nittany Lions on Monday at 4 p.m.
