Chargers Blanked in Season Opener

Box Score Death, taxes and losing to Alvernia in September seem to be the only certainties for the Lancaster Bible women's soccer program. For the fourth straight season and third time in four years to open the season, the Chargers lost to Alvernia.

The Crusaders wasted little time on Wednesday as they scored 38 seconds into the game off a corner kick. Laura Mauroschadt's header went off of LBC goalkeeper Kaitlyn Scheuing's hand and into the goal. The Chargers played well and had their own chances throughout the rest of the first half, but Alvernia struck twice early in the second half to put the game away.

Kelsey Gill and Mauroschadt scored 2:38 apart early in the second half to help the Crusaders to their second win of the season. Gill netted her second goal of the game with 6:40 to play as well. The four goals given up are the most ever to Alvernia in LBC program history and dating back to last season, the Chargers haven't scored in 185:49 of play.

"I thought we played pretty well after giving up the early goal," Chargers Head Coach Ken Craul said. "We had some very good opportunities in the first half and just didn't connect on a last pass or we missed a touch."

Craul said the team's focus and positional play seemed to wane in the second half.

"We didn't remain very disciplined in the middle third of the field which allowed them to play balls in behind our defense and gave them scoring opportunities," Craul said.

Scheuing, playing in her first collegiate game, made eight saves, while Alyssa Wesner and Evelyn Stauffer each had a shot on goal.

"We have some things to work on, but we did see a lot of good things from several players," Craul said.

LBC will open up on North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they take on Gallaudet in Washington, D.C. at 1 p.m. The Chargers have beaten the Bison, 5-0 in each of the past two seasons.

Notes:
-In two regular seasons, the Chargers have a 22-1 NEAC record with their only loss coming to Penn St. Berks last season.

-Alvernia and LBC met on this date exactly one year ago, with the Crusaders winning, 2-0.
