Box Score With 5:37 to play in the first half, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball trailed Elizabethtown, 25-19 in a close game that up until that point had been a back-and-forth game with both teams not playing their best ball. Over the next 5:37, the visiting Blue Jays found another gear and used a 20-5 run to blow the game open and take a 45-24 lead into halftime.Â
Despite Lancaster Bible's solid play in the second half, they could never make a serious dent in the deficit and lost to Elizabethtown, 72-55 at Horst Athletic Center. The loss drops the Chargers to 6-5 this season, matching their loss total from the entire 2012-13 season.
Elizabethtown's Rachel Forjan had seven of her game-high 21 points during the Blue Jays' first-half run, while Nikki Thompson had all six of her points during the five and a half minute outburst.
"Except for that stretch at the end of the first half, I thought we played pretty well defensively," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "They wore us out a bit there at the end of the half and we couldn't use all of our timeouts then."
Despite the loss, Helsel reaffirmed that he was pleased with the Chargers' defense.
"I thought we frustrated them for a lot of the night," Helsel said. "They ran all over us last season and tonight I thought we played pretty well for 35 minutes."
Lancaster Bible sophomore
Katy Stover had a team-high 17 points, while fellow sophomore
Aubrey Folger added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior
Shanice Smith recorded her fourth straight double-double with 10 points and 16 boards, 10 of which were on the offensive glass. Helsel said the team seemed sharper than their previous two outings.
"I was upset with our past two games because I didn't think we played well and we weren't very focused," Helsel said. "Tonight we were focused and the goal was to play well tonight and I thought for the most part we did that."
Sophomore
Christy Lorah had seven points for Chargers who outrebounded the Blue Jays, 46-44. Taylor Kreider was the only other Elizabethtown player in double-digits with 10 points.
The Chargers (6-5, 4-0 NEAC) return to the floor on Friday when they face Wells in Aurora, N.Y. at 8 p.m. The game is the first meeting between the two teams since the Chargers defeated the Express, 69-50 in the NEAC Semifinals last season.
