Big Three Get it Done Again for Chargers

Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's basketball team earned its best road win of the season on Friday night as the Chargers held off a late charge from Wells to defeat the Express, 67-58 in Aurora, N.Y. The big three of Aubrey Folger, Shanice Smith and Katy Stover once again led the Chargers as Stover poured in 28 points, while Smith had 16 points and 17 rebounds and Folger added 16 points and nine boards.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as the Chargers shot just 30 percent from the floor, while the Express shot 29.6 percent. Lancaster Bible ended the half on a 8-3 run over the final three minutes to open up a 31-19 lead, but Wells answered back over the first 4:40 of the second half as they opened the half on a 16-4 run to tie the game at 35-35.

The teams once again went cold from the field as Lancaster Bible led 45-40 with 7:40 to play after Smith hit one-of-two free throws from the line. Wells cut the deficit to three at 47-44, but the Chargers began to pull away with a 10-1 run over the next three minutes in which Stover scored eight of the ten points, including two three-pointers.

"Katy was dialed in and attacked the basket tonight," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said.

Wells trimmed the deficit to five with 1:32 to play, but Folger, Smith and Stover all scored down the stretch to clinch the game for the Chargers who improved to 7-5 overall and 5-0 in NEAC play.

"Tonight was a good win against a quality team," Helsel said. "Shanice was phenomenal on the boards, especially early and Aubrey had her typical solid, efficient game. We kept [Ashley] Roser off the boards which is always important when you play Wells."

Sophomore Christy Lorah had one of her best games of the season as well as she finished with three points and six boards to go along with tough defense over 28 minutes.

"Christy handled the ball well and rebounded," Helsel said. "She gave us great minutes and helped us handle the press as well."

The Chargers are now 4-0 all-time against Wells and have now won 13 straight regular season NEAC games and 15 overall including the postseason.

Lancaster Bible returns to the floor on Monday night when they face NCCAA East Region rival Valley Forge Christian in Phoenixville, Pa. at 7 p.m. The Chargers defeated the Patriots twice last season with both games being played in Lancaster.
