The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team played its first matches at the NCCAA Division II National Tournament since 2010 on Thursday in Kissimmee, Florida, but came away with two losses as the Chargers lost to Maranatha Baptist and Pensacola Christian. Playing in Pool A of the tournament, the Chargers will need to win twice and get some help on Friday if they are to advance out of Pool Play and into the semifinals which will be held on Saturday.
Lancaster Bible opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to top-seeded Maranatha Baptist. The Chargers played the match without leading hitter
Katie Coomber who continued to rest the ankle she hurt during the North Eastern Athletic Conference Quarterfinals last Friday in Washington, D.C. Maranatha Baptist won the match, 25-15, 25-11, 25-13 as the Sabercats blasted 33 kills against just six errors on 71 attempts for a .380 hitting percentage. The .380 hitting percentage is the best a team has hit against the Chargers all season long.
Junior
Joanna Butala and freshman
Myranda Kemrer each had six kills for the Chargers, while junior
Grace Scheuerman had a team-high eight digs. While the Sabercats seemingly couldn't miss, the Chargers had trouble hitting all match long and posted a negative hitting percentage (-.022) for just the third time all season and the first time since August 30 against Elizabethtown.
Though the result was the same, the Chargers played better against their second opponent, Pensacola Christian as the Chargers had 31 kills against 24 errors on 113 attempts. Coomber was back in the lineup and had nine kills and five digs, while Kemrer had eight kills and a match-high 15 digs. Junior
Hannah Derr had three kills and 26 assists to go with her five digs, while sophomore
Emily Olson had four kills.
The Eagles got nine kills apiece from Amelia Vaitekunas, Viennea Skinner and Asupa Leota as Pensacola Christian had 38 kills as a team.
Lancaster Bible (19-16) will play two more times on Friday as they face Ozark Christian at 12 p.m. and Ohio Christian at 6 p.m.
