Chargers Drop Five-Set Thriller in NEAC Quarters

A trademark of the Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team over the past decade has been a no-quit attitude. This season's squad has taken the previous statement to new heights in 2014 as the Chargers had won four of five, five-set matches this season prior to Friday night's North Eastern Athletic Conference Quarterfinal matchup against Keuka. Lancaster Bible's five-set magic finally ran out however as the Wolfpack defeated the Chargers, 3-2 in Washington, D.C.

The loss ends Lancaster Bible's chance at an NCAA Tournament bid, but the Chargers will continue their season next week at the NCCAA Division II National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. The loss also snaps Lancaster Bible's four-match win streak in five-set matches.

The Chargers took the first set, 25-16 on Friday night as they smashed home 14 kills on 42 attempts. Keuka took the next two sets however as they won the second set, 25-19 and squeaked out a third set victory, 25-23. The never-say-die Chargers battled back to win the fourth set, 25-20 and set up an epic finish to the night's second quarterfinal.

Keuka jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth set, but Lancaster Bible won eight of the next nine points to take a 9-4 lead. The Wolfpack took the next three points to close the gap to 9-7 and after the teams traded service errors, it was 10-8 Lancaster Bible. Lancaster Bible won three of the next four points as Myranda Kemrer's 19th kill of the night gave the Chargers a 13-9 advantage.

The Wolfpack called their final timeout and then rattled off the next three points and cut the deficit to 13-12. Kemrer's 20th and final kill of the evening gave Lancaster Bible a 14-12 lead and two match points. The Chargers could not close the deal however as Keuka got a kill from leading hitter Devan Curtis to make it 14-13 and then took advantage of three straight setting errors by the Chargers to wrap-up the victory.

Keuka (14-14) advances to face top-seeded Gallaudet in Saturday's NEAC Semifinals at 12 p.m.

In addition to her 20 kills, Kemrer also had 21 digs. Friday marks the second straight match Kemrer had over 20 kills and 20 digs in the same match as she had 22 kills and 22 digs last Saturday against Catholic. Senior Katie Coomber finished with 14 kills and 17 digs, while junior Grace Scheuerman led the Chargers with 23 digs. Fellow junior Joanna Butala added 10 kills and 15 digs of her own, while junior Hannah Derr had 48 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Emily Olson chipped in with seven kills as well for the Chargers who fell to 19-14 this season.

Lancaster Bible will be in Pool A at the NCCAA National Tournament next week as they will face Maranatha Baptist and Pensacola Christian on Thursday and Ozark Christian and Ohio Christian on Friday. The top two teams from Pool A and Pool B will advance to the semifinals which will be held Saturday morning. The semifinal winners will meet in the NCCAA Division II National Championship on Saturday evening.

Notes:
-Lancaster Bible is now 1-5 all-time against Keuka.

-The Chargers have made the NEAC Playoffs all four seasons they have been a part of the conference, but advanced to the NEAC Semifinals just once.

-Lancaster Bible will make its first appearance at the NCCAA National Tournament since 2010.
