Box Score There wasn't anything easy about it, but Lancaster Bible won its 11th straight game on Wednesday night, setting a new program record for consecutive wins. Lancaster Bible's 53-50 win over Gallaudet also clinches the North Eastern Athletic Conference South Division which the Chargers won for the second straight season.
The Chargers (16-5, 13-0 NEAC) led 23-9 with 8:15 remaining in the first half, but the Bison ended the half on a 19-5 run to tie the game at 28-28 at halftime. Lancaster Bible's offensive struggles didn't end with the first half however as they opened the second half by scoring just two points in the first 5:35.Â
By the time sophomore
Aubrey Folger's layup went through the hoop with 14:24 to play, the Chargers trailed 35-32 and found themselves fighting for every basket. The low scoring affair continued and the Chargers finally retook the lead on a 3-pointer by
Brooklyn Wilson with 8:42 to play. The 41-39 lead did not last though, as Gallaudet's Lindsay Stergio hit a bucket and the free throw two possessions later to give the Bison a 42-41 lead with 7:50 left.Â
Stephanie Weiss hit a 3-pointer for Gallaudet 1:20 later to give the Bison a 45-41 lead. The Chargers didn't panic however and Folger and
Katy Stover scored the game's next four points as Lancaster Bible tied the game, 45-45 with 4:41 remaining.
The teams traded baskets over the next three minutes and when Weiss hit two free throws with 1:05 left, the game entered the final minute of regulation tied, 50-50.Â
Wilson's 3-point attempt was no good with 50 seconds to play, but Folger grabbed the offensive rebound and the Chargers worked the ball around to Stover, but her layup would not go with 24 seconds to play. Again, Folger found the rebound and as she let go of her own shot, she was fouled. The crowd erupted as Folger's shot went through the hoop and the Chargers led, 52-50 with Folger going to the line to complete the three-point play.
Folger converted the free throw and two Gallaudet 3-point attempts missed as the Chargers won their 21st consecutive regular season NEAC game.Â
"We waited and waited to make our run, but we found a way," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "Our defense was solid and Aubrey was so good on both ends of the floor tonight. I know it's cliche, but she just refuses to lose."
Folger finished with 15 points and 19 rebounds, while Stover added 15 points and five boards.
Shanice Smith also scored in double figures with 11 points, while Wilson finished with six points and five assists.
"Playing a close game is good for us at this point in the season," Helsel said. "It's not great for my mental health sometimes, but it's important because we are going to play a lot of close games before this season is over."
The Chargers will host Keuka on Friday night at 8 p.m. The meeting is the first between the two teams since last season's NEAC Final that went to the Chargers, 67-63. It is Senior Night on Friday as the Chargers will honor Wilson,
Emily Martz and manager
Nicole Valinteno prior to the game.
