Chargers Split Rainy Day Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Lancaster Bible and Baptist Bible battled rain, wind and freezing temperatures during Wednesday's doubleheader as the teams split a doubleheader at Charger Field. The Defenders took game one in nine innings, 5-2, while the Chargers scored four times in the bottom half of the sixth inning during game two, to earn a 6-4 win.

Game one was a sloppy affair (literally and figuratively), as the teams combined for six errors, while managing just 11 hits. Chargers starter Nate Long was Jekyll and Hyde on the mound as he struck out nine batters, but allowed seven walks. The walks haunted him as he allowed just one hit in five innings, but left with the score tied at 2-2.

Both teams had chances to win prior to extra innings, but couldn't plate the winning run. It took a wacky play in the top of the ninth for the Defenders to take the lead as Dan Reed singled with runners on first and second. The throw home caught Nick Chupick in a rundown between home and third, but Lancaster Bible catcher Nate Burns misjudged the throw and it went into left field. Chupick scored, as did a hustling BJ Greathouse who scored from first.

Reed would score a batter later on a sacrifice fly and the Defenders won game one, 5-2.

Lancaster Bible seniors Matt Taliercio and Micah McClay combined for five the Chargers six hits in game one as Taliercio was 3-for-4, while McClay was 2-for-4. Each had an RBI, while McClay also scored a run.

Baptist Bible (2-3) led for much of game two as they held a 4-2 lead as the teams headed to the bottom half of the sixth inning. The slumbering bottom half of the Chargers line-up finally woke up as Erich Carroll led off the inning with a double. Jimmy Eagan followed with a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch as Ryan Hartline batted. Hartline too walked and loaded the bases for Ricky Bisch.

With Bisch at the plate, a passed ball scored Carroll as everyone moved up a base. Bisch hit the ball to third a few pitches later and Eagan beat the throw home to tie the game at 4-4 and put runners on first and third. Bisch stole second and Baptist Bible made a pitching change and brought Dan Reed in to pitch to Justin Taylor.

Taylor flied out to shallow right field for the first out of the inning as the Chargers held Hartline at third. Junior Caleb Mayer came to the plate next and drove a ball into left field that scored two runs. Mayer advanced to second on the throw as the Chargers had their first lead of the game.

The Defenders put two runners on in the seventh, but McClay shut the door as he went the distance to earn his second victory of the season. McClay scattered seven hits over seven inning as he struck out three and walked just one.

Taliercio had two more hits in game two as he finished 5-for-8 on the day, while Taylor also had two hits in game two. Bisch scored twice and added an RBI in his first start of the season.

The Chargers (2-5) return to the diamond on Friday when they host Dickinson at 3:30 p.m. The teams will play a single nine-inning game. The Red Devils are off to one of the best starts in school history as they are 11-1 this season and have won six straight.
