Box Score The Lancaster Bible baseball team faced a formidable foe on Friday in Dickinson College and the visiting Red Devils did not disappoint as they used an eight-run first inning to defeat the Chargers, 23-9 at Charger Field.
Thirteen different Dickinson players recorded a hit, including Mark Adams who had three of them. One of Adams' hits was a grand slam in the first inning that gave the Red Devils a 5-0 lead and Dickinson didn't stop there as they scored three more times in the first and sent 12 batters to the plate before a single Lancaster Bible player stepped into the box.
Lancaster Bible by no means had a slow day at the plate either as they pounded out 16 hits of their own, three of which came off the bat of senior
Micah McClay. However just when the Chargers thought they might have some momentum, the Red Devils (12-1) would score in the top half of the inning and regain any momentum they may have lost.
After the Chargers (2-6) cut the deficit to 8-3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Red Devils scored six more runs in the top of the fifth, fueled by a two-run home run by Phil Werner. Likewise, the Chargers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain a glimmer of hope as they trimmed the deficit to 17-8. That hope was quickly squashed as Dickinson scored three runs in each of the next two innings.
In addition to McClay's three hits and three runs scored,
Justin Taylor,
Caleb Mayer,
Erich Carroll and
Peter Shue each collected two hits. Carroll added three runs batted in, while Taylor had two RBI.
Errors plagued the Chargers and starting pitcher
Nate Burns. Two errors contributed to the eight-run first inning in which just three of the runs were earned. Burns pitched 3+ innings and allowed 11 hits and six walks, but struck out three and rebounded nicely in the second and third innings after a horrific first inning.
Lancaster Bible sophomore
Ricky Bisch recorded his first collegiate hit on Friday as he drove a ball right through the middle in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bisch would score later in the inning as well.Â
The Chargers were scheduled to play Penn St. York in York, Pa. on Saturday, but due to poor field conditions, the game will now be played at Lancaster Bible. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
