Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible baseball team swept a doubleheader from Cairn on Tuesday in the midst of a minor snowfall and improved to 5-6 this season. The Chargers have won three straight and four of five as they once again used the recipe of big bats, timely defense and great pitching on Tuesday to take down the Highlanders, 13-6 in game one and 8-3 in game two.
In the opener, the Chargers batted around in the first inning as they scored six runs, fueled by
Nate Long's three-run home run. Lancaster Bible scored four more times in the top of the second and held a 10-0 lead after just an inning and a half. Cairn scored twice in the second and once in the third, but was held in check by
Wade Zweizig who turned in his best performance of the season. Zweizig scattered 10 hits over seven innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out two.
The comfortable lead he worked with all game long was due to Lancaster Bible's 18 hits.
Micah McClay continued his hot hitting with three hits, while
Caleb Mayer and Long also had three hits.
Matt Taliercio,
Justin Taylor,
Kody Godsey and
Ryan Hartline added two hits apiece, while Mayer and Long each scored three runs. Long finished a double shy of the cycle as he drove in five runs which ties a career-high.
Game two featured less offense, perhaps due to the snow falling, but also because of the two pitchers who went toe-to-toe. McClay and Tyson Rohrs matched scoreless innings, until the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third. Despite trailing, it would be McClay who would settle down and earn his third win of the season. The Chargers answered right back in the top half of the fourth as they scored three times as Long and
Peter Shue each had RBI singles.
Lancaster Bible extended the lead in the sixth as the Chargers took advantage of Highlander errors and wild pitches to take a 6-1 lead. Taliercio singled and scored in the seventh to stretch the lead to 8-2 and after Cairn scored once in the bottom of the seventh, McClay closed the door and gave the Chargers their third straight win. McClay pitched seven strong innings as he scattered eight hits and allowed just one earned run, while striking out two. In 26 innings this season, McClay has a 1.38 earned run average and is a perfect 3-0.
Lancaster Bible will open North Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend as they host Keuka for a three-game series. The Chargers will host the Storm on Friday at 3 p.m. in a single, nine-inning game and the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at 12 p.m.
