Box Score The Lancaster Bible baseball team dropped its North Eastern Athletic Conference opener on Friday to Keuka, 10-7 as the Chargers let a four-run lead slip away in the ninth inning at Charger Field.
Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Chargers scored five times with two outs to take a 7-3 lead. Sophomore
Ricky Bisch hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3 and with
Ryan Hartline the next at the plate,
Kody Godsey scored on a passed ball to give the Chargers a 4-3 lead. Hartline then reached on an error which scored
Peter Shue and the Chargers led by two runs.
The next batter was
Justin Taylor who hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to cap the five run inning and give Lancaster Bible a 7-3 lead.
As impressive as the bottom of the eighth was for Lancaster Bible, the top of the ninth was the complete opposite. Keuka's Gavin Corbin led off the inning with a hit through the middle, which chased Lancaster Bible's
Wade Zweizig who was replaced by
Nate Long. Long got two quick outs, but a walk and two straight singles made the score 7-5. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches followed and the bases were loaded with the scoreboard reading 7-6 in favor of the Chargers.
Long was replaced by
Mitch Kumher who walked the Storm's cleanup hitter Jon Borchert as the Storm (6-4) tied the game at 7-7. The third hit-by-pitch of the inning gave Keuka an 8-7 lead and they added two more runs on a walk and single.
Lancaster Bible's
Erich Carroll walked in the ninth, but the Chargers could do no more as they dropped their 12th straight NEAC contest dating back to last season.
Taylor, Long, Carroll and Godsey each had a hit for the Chargers, while Taylor added two RBI.
The loss spoiled a great pitching performance by Lancaster Bible's
Nate Burns who pitched seven strong innings. Burns earned a no-decision as he scattered six hits and gave up three runs while striking out one.
Keuka's Jeremy Pyszczynski pitched 7 2/3 innings as he allowed five runs, but just one earned as he struck out six and gave up just three hits.
These two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, but rain has delayed them until Tuesday. Game one's start time is yet to be determined, but will be at 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. based upon which day Keuka travels to Lancaster.
