Lancaster Bible Drops Season Opener

Box Score The Lancaster Bible baseball team opened its 2014 season with a 9-8 loss to King's (Pa.) on Saturday night in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Chargers jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but couldn't hold on to their lead late in the game.

Lancaster Bible jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to Matt Taliercio's RBI triple and Erich Carroll's RBI double. The Chargers increased the lead to 5-0 in the second as Nate Long singled to drive in a run.

Chargers starter Micah McClay pitched five strong innings, giving up just two runs as he exited the game with Lancaster Bible leading 5-2. The game changed in the sixth inning as the Chargers committed a couple of errors which led to five Monarchs' runs as they took a 7-5 lead.

The game remained that way until the top of the eighth when freshman Brian Niedergall scored on a passed ball and Justin Taylor followed that up with a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 7-7. Once again however, King's put the pressure on in the bottom half of the inning and the Chargers' defense betrayed them as the Monarchs scored twice to take a 9-7 lead.

Lancaster Bible didn't give up and scored once in the top of the ninth and put runners on second and third with one out. The Chargers final two batters couldn't get the tying run across and King's held on for the one-run victory.

In what will hopefully not become a trend again this season, Saturday marked the seventh one-run loss in the past two seasons for the Chargers who lost by one run six times last year.

Lancaster Bible is back in action on Sunday when they face Penn Tech at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will be joining the NEAC for the 2014-15 academic year, thus this will be the last time the two teams meet as non-conference opponents.
