Chargers Earn First NEAC Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible baseball team earned its first North Eastern Athletic Conference win of the season on Tuesday as the Chargers split a doubleheader with Keuka. The Chargers took game one, 3-1, but the Storm held on for a 9-8 victory in game two at Charger Field.

In the opener, Chargers' starter Caleb Mayer pitched five strong innings for his second straight win. After waiting until his junior year for his first collegiate victory, Mayer has now won twice in two weeks. On Tuesday, he allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out three and walking three. Nate Burns and Ricky Bisch each had two hits for the Chargers, while senior Matt Taliercio hit his second home run of the season. With the Chargers leading 2-1 in the sixth, they were awarded a run on a controversial balk call that made it 3-1.

Keuka brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but junior Mitch Kumher got Jake Burachalk to ground out to Justin Taylor to give the Chargers their first NEAC win of the season and Kumher his second save.

Game two featured much more offense as Keuka jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings, fueled by Jon Borchert's solo home run in the top of the third. Lancaster Bible junior Nate Long answered in the bottom  half of the inning with his third home run of the season to cut the deficit to 4-1, but a Chargers' error in the fifth increased the Storm's lead to 5-1. Lancaster Bible took advantage of poor defense in their half of the fifth as they trimmed the deficit to 5-3.

Once again however, Keuka answered as Billy McDermott and Burachalk hit two-RBI doubles in the sixth as the Storm took a 9-3 lead.

Not to be outdone, the Chargers came right back in their half of the sixth as Long singled home Ryan Hartline to cut the deficit to 9-4. Taliercio followed and crushed a ball over the right field wall for a three-run home run that made it 9-7 in Keuka's favor. After the Storm went scoreless in the seventh, Lancaster Bible senior Kody Godsey hit his first home run of the year in the bottom half of the inning to make it 9-8, but the Chargers couldn't get the tying run in and lost by the same 9-8 score.

Senior Micah McClay took his first loss of the season as he scattered nine hits and gave up four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Jimmy Eagan pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh innings after Nate Horn came in to relieve McClay in the fifth.

Taylor finished game two 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Long was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Godsey also had two hits, while Taliercio had three RBI.

The Chargers (6-8, 1-2 NEAC) are back in action on Wednesday when they face Penn St. Abington in Abington, Pa. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
